Have you ever looked at your lunch and thought "I wonder what the dessert equivalent of this dish is" or are you normal? We definitely fall in the former group, which let's be honest is the fun group, because we like dreaming up tasty things! With that in mind, we've done a lot of pondering (and googling), and we have determined the dessert equivalent of each of our bases:
Dessert Mac and Cheese: Sweet Kugel
If you've never heard of kugel we can forgive you; it's not exactly mainstream but it is delicious! Pronounced "coogle," kugel, like pierogis, comes in both sweet and savory preparations, but essentially it's a creamy noodle pudding-casserole. For obvious reasons we're diving into the sweet version: egg noodles baked in a sugary bath of custard with a dash or two of cinnamon.
Load it a la Loaded: There are myriad ways to load your dessert macaroni and cheese; personally we'd go for fresh chopped fruit, a frosted cereal of your choosing (for some crunch), and whipped cream to top it all off.
Dessert Poutine: Sweet Potato Casserole
Sweet potato casserole is the clear dessert doppelganger of poutine—a potato base loaded with little white lumps of yum? Sound familiar? Poutine-ify the dish by prepping those potatoes as fries instead of mash, then toss on some baby marshmallows to melt a bit. Sweet potato casserole doesn’t have a formal gravy, so we recommend whipping up a butter caramel sauce to douse the dish in. Go on, be as liberal as ya like!
Load it a la Loaded: pile on some cinnamon-baked apple chunks, candied pecans, and, if you're really going for it, some drizzled chocolate sauce.
Dessert Pierogis: Sweet Pierogis
Pierogis don't need a dessert doppelganger, they serve their own purpose--because sweet pierogis are a real thing, they actually exist! Typically, dessert pierogis are stuffed with fruit, jams, sweet cheese, or a combo of the 3, and then served with a dusting of powdered sugar. And sometimes the dough is made with sour cream to give it some extra depth, mmmm.
Load it a la Loaded: Add a dollop of sweetened mascarpone cheese and a fruit compote. And if you really wanna load, make it a la mode (that's fancy talk for add a scoop of ice-cream!)
What are you still doing here, you should be making the dessert(s) of your dreams! Ohhh yes of course, we get it you need something salty to get you ready for that something sweet. Well in case it wasn't obvious, Get Loaded!
